Tashkent, Uzbekistan became a sister city of Seattle in 1973, when it was part of the Soviet Union. The sister relationship was the first one between an American city and a Soviet one. Seattle's Tashkent Park is named in honor of this relationship; there is, correspondingly, a Seattle Park in Tashkent.
