[edit] Alternatives

Voice-over-IP (VOIP) is becoming a popular alternative to home phone service. The most popular VOIP company is probably Vonage, although there are certainly others. They provide local and long distance phone service over an existing broadband line (like cable modem or DSL).

There is also some VOIP services which let you use your computer as a phone or some convolution of that. Examples of these are: Skype (Wikipedia Entry) and StanaPhone . Skype is more like an instant messaging client, while Stanaphone is more like a real telephone and also has free incoming calls. Stanaphone also emails you voicemail messages which is kinda nifty.
