The first white settlers in the region arrived in 1851 aboard the schooner Exact. They established their settlement on what's now known as Alki Beach, ambitiously naming the place, "New York Alki", (In the salish language, 'Alki' means by and by.)

The next year, they moved across the bay to take better advantage of the natural harbor.

A diorama depicting the landing can be found at the Museum of Natural History and Industry, or MOHAI.
