The park used to be primarily a water reservoir, and was closed for two years during which the reservoir was completely buried, leaving four new acres of brand-new park. Cal Anderson Park re-opened to the public on Sept 24, 2005. The new park has a water sculpture popular with kids and anyone who likes splashing around.

Adjacent to the park is the Bobby Morris Playfield, with a baseball/soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and public restrooms.
