Bainbridge Island is an island located in Puget Sound which measures roughly 27.78 square miles (17,779 acres). The community was founded in 1854 and currently has a population of 20,750 residents (713 persons per square miles or 1.1 persons per acre). Bainbridge Island is easily accessible from Seattle via Washington State Ferries. The Bainbridge Island was recently rated the second best small town in the United States to raise a family.
History[]
Bainbridge Island was the home of Suquamish Indians for thousands of years before white settlers moved to the area. The island was initially discovered in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver, which he documented in his British Survey of Puget Sound. Water travel shaped early growth on Bainbridge. Neighborhoods grew around 30 Mosquito Fleet Foot Ferry landings. Car ferry service began in the 1920's and the Agate Pass Bridge opened in 1950.

Bainbridge Island is home to Fort Ward State Park, which includes shore, two moderately difficult hiking trails through temperate rain-forest, and a long abandoned army barracks from World War II.
